Things I Have Found in My Hallway

A list in no particular order.

  1. A dirty Q-tip. It was quite frayed and had a pink plastic rod instead of the plain paper one. We’re talking one high-class—and feminine—Q-tip here.

  2. A Froz-Fruit popsicle stick. Neon green film on stick suggests the possibility of the Froz-Fruit being lime flavored.
  3. A pink elastic hairband. Upon coming home from work one night, perhaps some woman felt she had to just let it all down.
  4. A giant red plastic candy cane with tiny white Christmas lights wrapped around it, laid atop a dirty beige rug rolled like a deli cold cut and standing on its side. Units at Manhattan Storage are getting pricey, and no one’s really using the hallway, right?
  5. A pizza box, stationary, FOR FIVE DAYS.
  6. My boyfriend’s glove, on the first floor. (We live on the third.) It was so filthy I feared I would contract a disease by picking it up.
  7. The very bottom tip of a sugar cone. Having finished an ice cream cone, did some resident or guest simply drop the tiny tip of coney goodness to the floor, or was it an accident? Side note: as a child, I referred to the bottom of a sugar cone as a “Barbie ice cream cone.”
  8. A roach the size of a Matchbox car. It was pausing mid-scurry on the wall outside of the apartment from which emanates, often and on separate occasions, the smell of grape Jolly Ranchers and ammonia.
  9. A chicken bone. Appeared to have been cooked. Found at the foot of the third floor staircase outside Jolly Rancher/ammonia-smelling apartment.
  10. Indeterminate garbage. Old story.
