Postmodern style and quarterlife angst

Wednesday is one of the new days off. Yeah, that’s in addition to Monday, Saturday and Sunday. So basically, I work three days a week. Living the life, I tell you.

The question currently begging to be answered is this: Do I continue applying for possibly-lucrative design and digital media jobs, or pack up those quickly-fading skills and move on to the editorial world, where I know — ultimately — I want to end up? It’s always been a problem for me, having my fingers in too many pies (thanks Kate Jinx). Guidance counselors, college advisors and my mother, they’ve all referred to me as a Renaissance Woman, but really, I look at myself as more of an amateur, too easily distracted. I mean, really, settle down and pick something and really get into it already.

Anyway, Elle.com is hiring a web designer, and it looks like the kind of job I could do, barring the fact that it’s at Elle and a “strong interest in fashion” is one of the requirements. What about a strong interest in style that has little to do with actual fashion? Does that count? I get the feeling that working at Elle — for me at least — would be akin to a revisiting of the high school lunch room. I don’t think my PoMo sense of taste would fly. (Hah, I said PoMo. You try it now!)

fran - just a little encouragement … i work for the same company as elle (hachette - i work at american photo) and i wouldn’t worry about the whole ‘fashion’ thing .. the elle girls are pretty out there and edgy most of the time. good luck … it’s not a bad company to work for. don’t hesitate if you have any more questions!

    Danny: I’ve always known that.

Krissa: Thanks for the advice — I like hearing that there are still good companies to work for.
